Fishing the Little Buffalo near the cabin

Activities
If just kicking back in the hot tub, watching the deer with your morning coffee or taking a dip in the swimming hole isn’t enough to get your blood pumping, we can suggest some more strenuous activities without having to get in the car, such as fishing, swimming, snorkeling, canoeing the Little Buffalo, fossil and arrowhead hunting, hiking and birding.

During high water, experienced canoeists find paddling the Little Buffalo a challenging and
exhilarating experience without the crowds that are often present on the Buffalo National River. Put in
at our ford, paddle to Jasper and arrange for a shuttle back.

My Blue Heaven is located near the center of Newton County, which encompasses some of the most ruggedly beautiful terrain in the Ozark Mountains, with 6 of the 10 highest peaks in the bioregion. Over half of the county is public land, managed by either the National Park Service (Buffalo National River), the USDA Forest Service (Ozark National Forest) or Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (various Wildlife Management Areas).

Opportunities abound for the outdoor enthusiast including:

Canoeing
A short drive will put you at Ponca and some of the best white-water floating on the Buffalo River. If water levels are lower, put-in points from Pruitt to Tyler Bend are within easy reach. Numerous concessionaires can provide reasonable canoe rental and/or shuttle service. For more information, visit the Buffalo National River website.

Caving
Nearby commercial caves include:
* Mystic Caverns, about 30 minutes away,
* Blanchard Springs Caverns, a couple of hours away.
* Hurricane River Cave, about an hour and a half away.
Arrangements can be made for guided tours of nearby wild caves. Please inquire.

Wildlife Viewing
Newton County is the self-proclaimed “Elk Capital of
Arkansas” with several resident elk herds along the Buffalo
National River. The Ponca area provides the greatest
chance of an Elk sighting of anywhere in the Ozarks,
and is about a 30 minute drive from My Blue Heaven.

The footage featured in the video to the right was filmed
before dawn in late October, just outside Ponca, beside
the highway, from the vehicle.

We can also help with arrangements for horseback riding, mountain biking and guided fishing trips. Please inquire.

My Blue Heaven provides a wide selection of guidebooks for these and other activities.

During warm weather, grab your water shoes, mask and snorkel or spinning rod and explore the river.  Each hole of water has its own character and inhabitants, and the fishing is good to boot.
